Tuesday Thinger: Do You Have Glue?

Welcome to another week of Tuesday Thingers! We always love to hear from regular participants as well as new people.

This week we are exploring something totally different and un-Library Thing - we're looking at Glue! I first heard about Get Glue when a bloggy friend won a Kindle 2 from one of their contests! The topic then came up again at the recent Seattle blogger get-together. SO. . . I decided that maybe this whole Glue thing deserved a little attention.

What is Get Glue?
From their Website:

Developed by AdaptiveBlue, Glue enables you to connect with your friends on the web around the things you visit online. Glue is powered by semantic recognition technology that automatically identifies books, music, movies, wines, stocks, movie stars, recording artists, and more. Glue works hard to make it easy for you to find out what your friends think about things you're visiting online.
SO . . . on top of helping you find great books, movies, etc, you can also follow Get Glue on Twitter and play their games to win great weekly prizes. :) If you read some of their recent posts, you will probably find some familiar names winning some of those prizes!

Questions: Have you gotten Glue yet? If so, how do you like it? Do you follow Glue Genie on Twitter? Won anything in their quizzes?

My Answer: I am BRAND NEW to Glue, and am in the process of downloading the toolbar as I type (no, it doesn't take long, I just had to pause the installation to finish this post). At first I thought Get Glue would just be another thing to add to my ever growing to-do list, but I've been hearing great things about it and have to try it out now. So - I haven't gotten it quite yet, I'm in the process. I expect to like it though!

I do follow Glue Genie on Twitter, as I want to start doing some of those weekly quizzes!

Looking forward to reading everyone's answers!!

This was a great question, Wendi. Something new to think about. Here are my thoughts.

Hi Wendi and everyone else!

All of us at Glue appreciate being part of the Tuesday Thinger!

Caite, I read your post carefully and will respond with a comment shortly [we value hearing insight and opinions from bookish people so thanks for sharing!]

I want to clarify a few things for everyone who is checking out Glue:

First, Glue doesn't require any additional work on your behalf. It's designed to deliver complimentary value automatically as you browse popular book sites.

When you, say, visit a book on LibraryThing you'll be able to see which of your Twitter or Facebook friends have visited that book and you can read their short review. It doesn't matter where or when you and your friends visit the book. Because Glue works at the object level it connects around the unique book, regardless of the website visited.

Here's a blog post that features a number of book bloggers who are using Glue. You may recognize many of the names: http://bit.ly/jxNem

What's great is that they are all finding different benefit from using Glue.

Second, some people have raised the question of privacy - an important question and one that we take very seriously.

Glue is only active on popular sites about books, movies, music [see the entire list at www.getglue.com/sites] On all other sites Glue is completely inactive.

As you browse book sites you can signal to friends that you like the book by clicking the HEART button. You can also leave a short 2cent comment [and post it to Twitter].

Glue was designed because while we all like knowing what our friends think of the books that we may read or the movies that we may watch, none of us want to spend extra time to do additional work to find out this information.

Glue works automatically to connect us intelligently to friends around the books that we have a common interest in.

Beyond that, I don't know what to say!

We work hard to provide exceptional customer service so I encourage you to ask for clarification on anything I've mentioned here.

Hope to see you on Glue!

Fraser

the automatic part is a large part of what makes it so creepy IMHO.

as much as I would love to win an Evil Demon Device (Kindle), it is not worth the price to me.
But hey, as I said on my blog, to each their own....

Fraser said...

Caite - fair enough. Some people who aren't familiar with the product may think that the automatic aspect is odd -- we're generally used to having to do a lot of work to get any benefit online.

Glue has a number of privacy controls that help users find a comfortable place.

You can protect your presence and then only approved people will see the books and movies that you like.

You can also remove any item from your collection.
