Sponsored by The Cheerios family of cereals, First Book and Jon Scieszka, author of the popular "Trucktown" series and other children´s books
Play a fun trivia game based on the fun "Trucktown" books written by Jon Scieszka and earn votes for the state of your choice! I got 72% correct ~ See if you can beat me!! Leave a comment and let me know how you did!
Perfect for : Supporting your local community, encouraging reading, and supporting your health!
I learned about this program from the wonderful people at MyBlogSpark, who very kindly sent me a box of Cheerios and some sample books to review. My family got to try out the Frosted Cheerios, which we all loved! We ate them for breakfast and also used them for snacks, and I felt great, because my family was still getting the same great benefits as normal Cheerios, but with a boost of sweetness. Some of the benefits are that they are lowfat, have extra calcium and over 12 important vitamins and minerals!
Our toddler loved both the Cheerios (which really do make a great snack for little fingers) and the books that Cheerios sent with for us to look through. One of his favorites is a Trucktown book by Jon Scieszka called Junkyard Fort. He loved the colorful pictures and all the different trucks! The book included both English and Spanish, and also had a small section of activities at the back. Thanks Cheerios!
From MyBlogSpark:
Access to books is essential to reading development. However, did you know that over 80 percent of childcare centers serving low-income children lack age-appropriate books? And a recent study shows that the ratio of books per child in middle income neighborhoods is 13 to 1, while in low-income neighborhoods, the ratio is 1 age-appropriate book for every 300 children.
The Cheerios family of cereals, First Book and Jon Scieszka, author of the popular "Trucktown" series and other children´s books, have joined together to deliver 100,000 books to community-based programs serving children in need - and we´d love your help! All you have to do is go online with your child and test your combined knowledge of children´s books by answering trivia questions related to "Trucktown" and other great children´s books.
For every trivia question answered correctly, you can cast one vote for the state you would like to receive books. The five states receiving the most votes will get 20,000 books each, for a total of 100,000 books. Visit www.FirstBook.org/Scieszka to test your knowledge and start voting.

My state of California, is one of the richest and also in the biggest debt. They are constantly cutting school budgets and books are sorely needed.

I think Missouri needs these books because the city of St. Louis school district could really use these. Such a poor district.

We moved out of Michigan last year and were so lucky to be able to even sell our house. We took a huge hit, but we were the lucky ones. Unemployment is so high and spirits are low. Cuts to the schools in our town were huge. I voted for Michigan even though it's not our state. I feel bad for all the kids that are being left behind.

I got 1 out of 10-that was ridiculously hard. I'm in Illinois. I'm sure I lowered our state but we really need it becaue Illinois is almost as broke as California.

I think Louisiana should get 20,000 books because so many kids and schools lost everything during hurricane Katrina and our state definitely has not financially recovered.

Missouri has high unemployment and I am sure there are lots of kids who would benefit from new books that parents may not be able to afford at this time. thanks for the contest!
The state of SC has so many people living in poverty. The children need a chance to be exposed to books. I dontate books to schools, give books to groups at holiday times and whatever I can think of to help.
I got 5 right
I did terrible. lol I got 16 out of 37 correct. Thank you!
My state should get 20000 books because of all the people that have lost their jobs here, no one spends money on books anymore. Our library has cut almost 1/3 of their budget, so they don't get many new books anymore. Thanks for the chance!

THE STATE OF PA SHOULD GET THIS BECAUSE OF UNEMPLOYMENT AND BECAUSE ANYTIME YOUR EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM IMPROVES THE FUTURE OF YOUR NATION IMPROVES
My state deserves 20,000 books because so many schools have had levies fail and cuts are being made left and right. Our kids need books to help them learn and grow.
Iowa is ranked 22nd but they should get it because the education budget has been cut to nothing, with more cuts and school closings coming next year
My state Texas should get it. At the end of the year my daughters school doesnt throw out the books that are no longer in the curiculum or no longer in the library. They put them on book carts with the sign Free Books. This way kids can continue reading threw the summer.

I live in Michigan, so my state should get books because our economy is hurting BADLY these days but books are important for children to stay educated.
It's great that any state will get books, though, helping kids anywhere is always a good thing.

Hi! Thanks for the great giveaway! I think my state should get the 20,000 books because we live in the state with the highest property taxes so when we have school budget votes they often don't pass. Which mean budgets get cut. Which means nonessentials (books) are cut!

My state should get the books because they are greatly needed. The State of Oklahoma has a very low test rate for students and education starts with reading comprehension

I would love for my state to receive the books. We have a large number of children on free and reduced lunch and all of these children could benefit from being able to have books in their home. In addition, we have a large number of children who come from Spanish speaking homes and we need books in English for these children to read. I know there are many other very worthy states...I wish all of them could receive something like this...

California desperately needs the books! Our education system is horrible!
My state and EVERY state should get these books and more books. And more books. I believe education in this country is sad and getting sadder. In some cases it is little more than babysitting, not a real education.
I think MD should get this since one of our main cities, Baltimore, has most of the children scoring well below the national averages. This could greatly increase our efforts in education.
I got 6 out of 10 correct on the Trivia today (I'm going to have to expand my knowledge of children's literature)

I haven't read those books and I got more wrong than right!
So, my state NY needs books because our governor has cut aid to both libraries and schools. Which means our already outrageous property & school taxes will go up, up, up. So our libraries and schools need all the help they can get - these 20,000 books would certainly help!

I live in North Carolina, and I believe my state should be given the large quantity of books because the poverty rate in NC has dramatically increased over the past couple of years. Schools are being cut back largely, and children are being penalized because of the economic downfall of our country! North Carolina is my home, and considering I am planning on being a teacher in NC, I think they should be helped :)

My state, Florida, probably needs books more than any other. The number of non-English speaking families is tremendous; both legal and illegal. And so many families live at or below the poverty level that it is a heartbreak. Any thing that helps bring literacy to the children of our state is a blessing.

I did very badly at the trivia, because I don't have kids, and the books they ask about are way past my time. I believe Florida could really use the 20,000 books, because we have some really poor areas where kids may not have books of their own or be encouraged to read at home. First Book is very active here in Escambia County. I'd love to see this chapter receive some of those books, because I know how much they are needed.
Our state, NC, should get the books because we are one of the top states leading the way in education
