Guest Post and Giveaway: CH Admirand, Author of A Wedding In Apple Grove

I've had the pleasure of reading and featuring some of CH Admirand's books here on Wendi's Book Corner, so it is with great pleasure that I get to host a guest post written by her today.

She has just written and released a new book called A Wedding In Cedar Grove, so I had an opportunity to host a guest post and I got to ask Ms. Admirand about the challenges and benefits of writing about a small town.  Here is what she shared with me:

Hi Wendi, thanks for inviting me to guest blog today about the challenges/benefits of writing about a small town. For me, thinking in terms of a small town was very easy. Having grown up on Cedar Hill, a small community of 25 homes on dead-end streets in a tiny corner of Wayne, NJ…if you didn’t live on Cedar Hill, you really didn’t have any reason to drive up there. We always felt as if we were a world away from everyone else in town. We were always the last neighborhood to see the plow whenever there was a snow storm…and boy did we pray that it would be as close to lunchtime as possible so that we’d have to stay home. For the last 30 years, we’ve lived in Lindy’s Lake—a small lake community in West Milford, NJ. The lake had a wonderful mix of long-time residents and new residents just starting out and having families. There were five of us pregnant at the same time, so our kids attended pre-school through high school together. Before pre-school we started our own play groups and then decided our lake needed an arts and crafts day for kids. So many fun activities and all within walking distance to the Manor House…our lake’s community gathering place.

The challenge for me was trying to keep my quirky characters, based on real-life people from sounding too over the top. When my editor and I were first discussing the types of people and setting for the book I started thinking about all of those delightful people I’d grown up with and met over the years. I just had to include the little old man we used to see walking in town…he had a walking stick and was always dressed in khaki jodphers, a white button-down shirt and wellingtons—no matter what the weather was. He looked as if he’d been transported from England to West Milford and would nod regally to passersby. The twist was that I could just see a little old lady dressed in the same attire because she would be running her own garden center…that’s how Miss Trudi Philo came to be. J

The sense of community is what has always been the strongest in the neighborhood where I grew up and where we raised our family, and that is what I wanted to make sure I convey to readers…that marvelous sense that your family, friends, and neighbors care about you and for you. I love embracing that aspect of small town life and hope readers will enjoy reading about small town life in Apple Grove, Ohio.

Book Review: Jesse (The Secret Lives of Cowboys, Book 3) by C.H. Admirand

I have read all three of the books in C.H. Admirand's The Secret Lives of Cowboys series, which includes: Tyler (Book 1), Dylan (Book 2) and now Jesse (Book 3).  I loved them all, but I think my favorite is Jesse, because while the story is focused on the third Garahan brother Jesse, you also get to read about the other two and their significant others as well.

Jesse's story is special.  He has been burned in the recent past by the same woman TWICE.  That is twice his heart was broken, and now he is fiercely loyal to his brothers and the Circle G Ranch.

One afternoon, he stops to help a woman who's car has broken down by the side of the road, little knowing that it will change his life forever.

Danielle's car has overheated and she is SO close to her beloved Uncle's home, where she hopes to be able to pull her life together and start fresh with her little pink cowgirl daughter Lacy, whose father up and left both ladies after he decided that married life wasn't for him and he wanted to focus on his bull-riding career.

It seems that fate has thrown Jesse, Danielle and little Lacy together to see if they can learn to trust and love again.

Readers will fall in love with ALL the characters, including Danielle's Uncle, but especially with little Lacy.  And we get a good peek at the Garahan brother's cousins, which I hope will lead to more books!!

I absolutely love C.H. Admirand's writing style.  She has infused her books with warmth and rugged family values.  You want to meet her characters in real life, and what I wouldn't give to visit the Circle G Ranch and eat at Danielle's Uncle's Diner.

Cowboy Romances aren't my normal reads, and I LOVE these, so even if they aren't YOUR norm, run out and give one a try - I'll bet you'll love these Irish brothers and their gals as much as I do.

Review: The Return of Black Douglas by Elaine Coffman (A New Favorite Among Historical Romance)

The Return of Black DouglasI love The Return of Black Douglas by Elaine Coffman and found it to be one of the most satisfying historical romances I've read recently... and it is certainly listed among my favorites of all time!

The Return of Black Douglas takes us back 500 years to the Scottish Highlands in 1515, to a time when men were heroes, and it required strength to survive.  Add in a quirky ghost who comes and goes as he pleases and talks in riddles, two modern day women (twins) thrown back in time, one stubborn (and handsome) clan chief determined not to marry, and you've got quite a wonderful story.
"Ye canna have everything ye want, and ye doona want everything ye get.  And yet there is balance of life." (The ghost of Black Douglas is speaking to Isobella, page 251, ARC Edition)

Most of the story takes place in 1515, with some reference to modern day technology and medicines, but what really impressed me was how real the Scotland of old seemed as Elaine Coffman told the story of Alysandir and Isobella.  It is a ruggedly beautiful time, that had a different and very strict code of honor.

Elaine Coffman has written a story full of adventure, passion, rugged landscapes and warm-hearted characters.  It is the perfect story for anyone who enjoys historical romance, the Scottish Highlands, and time-travel.

And the great news is that it looks like Elaine Coffman is working on Elisabeth's (Isobella's twin sister who is a doctor) story, which is scheduled to be available April of 2012!!!  I'm so glad we will get to revisit these characters again!

About the Book: (From the publisher)
He’ll help a woman in need, no matter where she came from…

Alysandir Mackinnon rules his clan with a fair but iron fist. He has no time for softness or, as he sees it, weakness. But when he encounters a bewitching young beauty who may or may not be a dangerous spy, but is surely in mortal danger, he’s compelled to help…

She’s always wondered if she was born in the wrong time…

Thrown back in time to the tumultuous, dangerous Scottish Highlands of the sixteenth century, Isobella Douglas has a lot to learn about her ancestors, herself, and her place in the world. Especially when she encounters a Highland laird who puts modern men to shame…

Each one has secrets to keep, until they begin to strike a chord in each other’s hearts that’s never been touched before…

Review: Demons Are A Girl's Best Friend by Linda Wisdom

Demons Are a Girl's Best FriendI thoroughly loved this book! Linda Wisdom created a fun paranormal world within our own, full of colorful characters, flirty banter, edgy adventure, and a dreamy demon, all tempered by the possibility of a cataclysmic world-altering dark event. Demons Are A Girl's Best Friend is the perfect adventure for anyone looking for a little romantic fun.

Maggie makes a great and very entertaining witch, with a 700 year history behind her, and Declon is a smouldering love-interest who just so happens to actually smoulder on occasion... since he's another colorful character!

One of the things that made this book so special and fun were the supporting characters (which I would love to see back in sequels!!).  They each were so individual and colorful in their own ways, but worked together to create a whole team.  Among my favorites: Elle (Short for Elegance), the jewel encrusted Black Widow spider who becomes a weapon/tattoo on Maggie's shoulder, and Sybil, the purple elf who specializes in interrogation with her soothing abilities (who doesn't just love the scents of lavender and vanilla that just happen to flow from her wings??).  And gosh, you can't forget the message-toting, caffine-drinking ferret messengers, and the gnomes... honestly, you've got to read this one simply because the paranormal world Linda Wisdom has created was so fun to watch unfold among the pages of the book!

Review: Tyler (The Secret Life Of Cowboys) by C.H. Admirand

Tyler (The Secret Life of Cowboys)
I fell in love with the characters in Tyler by C. H. Admirand.  Tyler is the man you want to be the cowboy next door.  He is nice, helpful, responsible, doesn't complain, and he is working hard!  Both in his "day" job at the family ranch, and at his second job... as a stripper/eye candy at The Lucky Star bar/ladies club, which is owned by a group of female cousins.  The cousins, Emily and Jolene are trying to keep the bar open, so what starts as a win-win for both Tyler and the girls ends up an even sweeter deal when sparks fly between Tyler and Emily.

This was a fun and entertaining book, that made me feel good about those guys that do still exist out there who look out for friends and family, who aren't afraid to get their hands dirty, and who do what it takes to make their dreams come true!  I loved the family feel I got as I read the story, with Tyler and his brothers, and Emily and her cousins.

I can't wait to see what happens in the next book in the series, Dylan (found on the author's site).

About the Book:
Desperate times call for desperate measures...
When Tyler Garahan said he'd do anything to save his family's ranch, he never thought that would include taking a job as a stripper at a local ladies' club. But the club's fiery redheaded bookkeeper captures Tyler's attention, and for her, he'll swallow his pride...

And one good turn deserves another...
Emily Langley feels for the gorgeous cowboy. It's obvious that he's the real deal and wouldn't be caught dead in a ladies' revue if he wasn't in big trouble. And when he looks at her like that, she'll do anything to help...
Working days on the ranch and nights at the ladies' club, Tyler is plumb exhausted. But could it be that his beautiful boss needs him just as much as he needs her...

Review: Wolf Fever by Terry Spear

Wolf FeverWolf Fever, the sixth book in Terry Spear's Werewolf Series, did nothing but exceed my already high expectations.

Carol Woods is a nurse, who was inadvertently bit by a werewolf and turned into a lupus garou.  Not only does she NOT want to be a lupus garou, but she fights the urge to shift by distracting herself with visions of the future she has had since a child.  Her visions generally foretell a nearing disaster, so when she sees other lupus garou unable to shift from their wolf form, she knows something terrible is coming.  And as if that isn't enough to be dealing with, her pack leader is putting on the pressure by telling Carol that she needs to find a mate... and soon!

Ryan McKinley has come to the area to ask Carol a few questions about her "visions" after having solved a case he was working on with her help.  Carol feels an attraction to Ryan, BUT he is the alpha leader of another pack.  While he is there, Ryan becomes involved in Carol's pack when a red wolf is found in the area and it is believed one or more rogue red wolves may be trying to take Carol or Lelandi, the pack leader's mate.  Ryan becomes Carol's bodyguard and begins to question his doubt in the validity of her visions as they become reality and some pack members are unable to shift back to their human forms.

The story becomes a race against time to solve the question of who is coming after Carol, what they want, and how to stop the "Wolf Fever" that is all too real.

I'm always so amazed at how well she writes her characters and the depth she gives them.  This book took the normal "pack" dynamics Ms. Spear writes so well and added more to it by adding to the complexity and involving many very strong characters.  Not only were there many things going on within the story, all of which were well-written making it easy to follow, but even the bad guys were written in a way as to make the reader question how bad they really were.  And finding a possible mate for Carol - Wow - she had many possibilities, and there were three that I was really torn between... I loved being kept on edge by so many aspects of the story!

The book touches on characters from previous books, but reads great as a stand-alone.  If you've already read other books from the series, you'll want to get this one, and if you haven't... well, give this one a shot!  I'll bet you'll be running out to find the other books in the series!  And even better?  The series is slated for at least four more books, two coming in 2011, and two following those.

About the Book:
She may be his destiny, but she's not his first choice...

Hospital nurse and newly turned red werewolf Carol Woods is being pressured by her pack leader to find a mate, but he's the only guy in the pack who remotely attracts her.

Why is he playing so hard to get?

The fate of the pack rests on his shoulders...
Gray pack leader Ryan McKinley doesn't want anything to do with Carol unless she's willing to embrace her wolf nature-no matter how beautiful she is.

But when a virus infects the local lupus garou pack, Ryan realizes just how wrong he's been not to seize the moment with the woman he's come to love. And now, it may be too late...

Excerpt (from the author's website):
Disgruntled with himself for slinking through Darien’s forest as a wolf so he could watch the house for any sign of Carol Wood, Chester Ryan McKinley hated his obsession. Even now when his P.I. practice had taken a back burner to his position as mayor and pack leader of Green Valley, he couldn’t give up thinking about Carol, whom he’d met five months earlier while investigating a murder case involving Darien’s pack. Ryan had found a lot of evidence against the murderer, but Carol’s testimony had solicited the confession and the truth of the matter.

Long-legged and stacked, with hair the color of the golden sun and eyes as deep and mysterious as a shadowed blue lake, she had often worn a troubled expression during the investigation. Most likely due to the mess she’d gotten herself into as a human. The fact she’d managed to get herself into such a predicament bothered him more than he liked to consider. As was his rescuing nature, he’d wanted to save her from her plight, ensure she didn’t become one of his kind, and shield her from what they were.

But how could he have? She’d recognized his kind were lupus garous through strange visions, or so she had said. There had been no way to change events. During an ensuing fight between gray and red lupus garou packs, a red had bitten her and turned her. Ryan sure the hell wished he’d been protecting her.

Carol had been an innocent, unprepared for what would happen and unable to fight back. He imagined she’d never before witnessed wolf combat, which for a human had to have been extremely unnerving. Although every ounce of logic he possessed told him that people couldn’t foresee the future, something about her—maybe her sincerity, the fear she’d exhibited, or the notion that she couldn’t have learned all that she had through any other means—chiseled away at his wall of doubt.

Most of all, he admired her for her fortitude and dependability. She hadn’t panicked or fought against her fate. Now he was sure Darien would be pushing for her to take a mate. For life… that’s how they mated. That she would need one bothered him more than he liked to admit. Those who were born lupus garous could do with or without having a mate. Their choice. But a newly turned lupus garou? Allowing a new werewolf too much freedom was too dangerous.

The drapes suddenly were thrust aside in the guestroom Lelandi had once used. And there, standing in the window in a diaphanous gown of pale blue silk, the blonde pondered the woods. Almost as if she knew he was there watching for her. Which sent an unexpected surge of feral desire through his bloodstream. What was wrong with him that she had such an effect on him?

Her appearance in the gown at this early evening hour surprised him. Had she worked a long shift at the hospital?

The lovely rounded form of her breasts and nipples, peaked in anticipation of a lover’s touch in the nearly see-through gown, became the focus of his attention. Hell. Not intending to enjoy the sight of her as a voyeur would nor to give into his wolfish yearnings, he stepped forward so she could witness she was not alone. He meant to encourage her to close the drapes and return to bed, to warn her that the wolves in these woods were much more than just wolves. They were also men, like any of his kind, with earthly desires that needed to be sated.

Instead of closing the curtains, she challenged him with those eyes of hers. What had caught his attention about the woman, even during the investigation, were her classically attractive facial features—the high cheekbones and the perfect skin, framed by golden hair, and the large, striking blue eyes that could swallow a man whole.

When she had spoken, full kissable lips had captured his attention more than once. She wasn’t movie-star gorgeous, having instead the wholesome, girl-next-door look, but that appealed to him even more.

She frowned at him and then yanked the drapes closed. Good. She’d finally come to her senses. He couldn’t let go of the notion that the nurse thought she had the ability to make psychic predictions. It was the principle of the thing, he told himself. He intended to prove to himself, and to her, that she had come by her information about the murder through means other than some form of sixth sense. Either she had subconsciously learned the truth, or she had meddled in the investigation and was unwilling to tell about it.

Yet something deeper plagued him about the woman. Some elusive feeling that she could be in trouble. She could be trouble—that was more like it. Any newly turned wolf certainly could be that. He tried to tell himself his being here wasn’t about anything other than resolving the doubts that plagued him; although… something else bothered him, and he just couldn’t put his finger on what.

Ears perked, he sat on his haunches, unable to take his gaze off her window and thinking of her returning to bed and then buried under her blankets. The unsolicited wish that he could be with her, snuggling and heating her up, flashed through his brain. Hell, he didn’t need to be sidetracked anymore than he already was.

Despite the case having been solved, and him having no real reason to come back to Silver Town, Ryan was attending the spring festival the next morning to learn more about Darien’s celebrations. Like he’d done before, Ryan would take the information back to his own people who wanted something of what Darien and his people had—a town run by the werewolf kind.

But Darien had only reluctantly allowed Ryan to investigate as an outsider to discover the murderer in the pack. He was sure Darien wouldn’t favor seeing him again under the circumstances, not when Ryan intended to question Carol further about her visions. Darien sure wouldn’t approve of Ryan lurking about his woodland estate early in the evening. Especially when Ryan didn’t have one good reason for being near Darien’s house like this, no matter how much he tried to convince himself he did.

A click on a backdoor lock got Ryan’s attention, and he quickly rose and backed into the woods to keep Darien or his people from seeing him. The door opened.

Ryan’s jaw dropped.

Little Miss Nightingale stepped out of the house onto the flagstone patio, peering in his direction. Not dressed warmly enough for the out-of-doors this evening, she wore a robin’s egg blue tam that was perched on top of her head, a matching fluffy sweater that caressed her perky round breasts, pale blue jeans that showcased her shapely legs, and a pair of fuzzy blue slippers that made her feet look twice their size.

He raised his brows. Hell. She had no business coming out into the night looking the way she did—soft and cuddly and vulnerable—with no way to defend herself in the event someone dangerous was lurking about.

What had she intended to do? Search for him? Ask him his business?

At first, she stood stock-still, just staring into the woods. At the very place from which he watched her through a grove of Douglas firs. But he didn’t think she could see him.

And then? She rubbed her hands together as if she were on a wolf-hunting mission and stalked toward the woods, headed straight for him! The notion that she’d hunt him down appealed on a strictly primal level. Her hell-bent determination wreaked havoc with his need to keep this on a purely professional basis. Willful is how he’d describe her actions. What if he’d been bad news?

But he wasn’t, although right now he had the strongest urge to circle around her through the woods and stalk her right back. A game between wolves. A competition. And more. Which made him wonder if she’d understand their wolf ways, not having grown up learning them. He also was curious just how far she’d go to discover who he was.

Instead of tracking her down, he moved deeper into the woods, as if luring her into his trap, and listened to her steady footsteps. They were more hurried now as she tried to reach the forest before he disappeared for good, he figured. Or maybe the fact he wasn’t in plain sight gave her more courage.

She stopped only a few feet away, the gray-green leaves of a Douglas fir brushing her arm, her eyes searching the dark woods as he watched her. His heart beat harder—the urge to hunt in his blood. Then she lifted her nose in a wolf’s way, trying to catch his scent.

Seeing her react the way his kind would—smelling for scents, tilting her head as she listened more carefully, attempting to track him down like a wolf on the hunt—he felt a new wave of respect for her wash over him. He hadn’t seen this side of her before. It suited her.

Quickly, she turned her head, and when she saw him, her eyes widened. Luminescent. Huge. Bewitching.

Unable to help himself when he should have been annoyed with her impulsivity at leaving the house without protection, he gave her a slight smile. The woman would be his undoing.

What now? He wanted to force her to return to the house. On the other hand, he’d probably never get another chance to question her in private like this. He laughed at himself. Yeah, he’d shift, stand here naked in the cold as a human, and question her as if she was a suspect in one of his cases. He’d make such an impressive and frightening inquisitor that she’d quickly spill her story.

Review: Seduced By The Wolf by Terry Spear

I absolutely loved this book (well, if I'm absolutely honest, I haven't read a book written by Terry Spear that I didn't just love)! Author Terry Spear has been able to create a story that has such amazing interpersonal dynamics... from teamwork to individual relationships, which always captivates me.

Ready for some romance, action, and a little shape-shifting? If so, this is the book for you. Cassie Roux lost her family and everything she knew at a young age, and has learned to take care of herself. She is now a biologist who is an expert on wolfs, and she is trying to educate farmers in Oregon (and others) on the importance of wolfs so they don't become extinct. She is also secretly trying to find an endangered red wolf who has pups so she can help them survive. Because she is in another pack's territory, she must be very careful to keep from getting caught.

Liedolf Wildhaven is a rancher in Oregon who has just taken control of a pack who had been mistreated by their previous leader. While trying to re-build the pack's trust, control some newly turned lupus garou, and keep their existence from becoming common knowledge to the local area zoo keepers, he becomes interested in Cassie.

Cassie leads Liedolf on a good chase, and he in turn tempts her but also respects her independence.

Terry Spear has written a book that shines... in the location she has chosen (yes, I AM partial to the Pacific Northwest!), in the story itself, in the relationships that are explored, and the sense of family that prevails. I loved it and look forward to more books by Spear.

About the Book:
His first priority is to protect his pack...
Werewolf pack leader Leidolf Wildhaven has just taken over a demoralized pack. With rogue wolves on the loose causing havoc and the authorities from the zoo suddenly zeroing in on the local wolf population, the last thing he needs in his territory is a do-gooder female, no matter how beautiful and enticing she is...

She'll do anything to help wolves...
Biologist Cassie Roux has dedicated her life to protecting wolves in the wild. On a desperate mission to help a she-wolf with newborn pups, the last thing Cassie needs right now is a nosy and entirely too attractive werewolf pack leader trying to track her down...

With rogue wolves and hunters threatening at every turn, Cassie and Leidolf may find their attraction the most dangerous force of all...

Additional from the publisher: Fascinating aspects of real-life wolf behavior based on extensive research on how wolves live in the wild make Terry Spear's werewolf paranormal series stand out and attract a growing audience. The fifth in the series features heroine Cassie Roux, a biologist who has studied wolves for years, trying to prove to the world they're not evil predators. A red lupus garou (werewolf), who lost her pack and was raised by real wolves, she has dedicated her life to their preservation. Leidolf Wildhaven is a red lupus garou pack leader who has more troubles than he ever thought possible, what with running a pack, a ranch, and other businesses. When Cassie—a rare red female— is spotted in his territory, Leidolf figures he's found the answer to his pack's threatened extinction. Only the headstrong woman has other priorities…

Excerpt: (linked from Amazon)

Except for a couple of cars parked outside the town hall, the lot was empty, and it appeared the wolf biologist speaking here tonight wouldn't have much of an audience to lecture to.

The Oregon air surrounding him felt damp and cool, not like the drier, much sunnier weather Leidolf Wildhaven had left behind in Colorado. He kept telling himself he'd get used to it. Old-time brass lanterns cast a golden glow over the sidewalk. A steady breeze stirred the spring leaves of the massive white oaks that lined the brick walk leading to the two-story building. An antiquated clock chimed seven times in the center of the tower on top, announcing to everyone in the listening area that the time had arrived for the lecture to begin. He let out his breath and headed for the building.

Anything to do with wolves concerned him, and even though the "doctor" couldn't say anything that he didn't already know, he wanted to see how others reacted to her talk concerning them. At this rate, it looked as though no one was going to show.

He took two steps at a time up the brick stairs and strode into the building, his gaze focusing on the empty chairs and the speakerless podium.

Dressed in a gray suit, Millie Meekle, the woman in charge of tourism and special events in the area, rung her hands nearby and shook her head, her stiff, glued-together silver hair not moving a fraction out of place.

"Oh, Mr. Wildhaven, this is a disaster. Dr. Roux had a flat tire at the place she's staying, and my husband dropped me off here, so I haven't any vehicle to go get her." She waved at the empty seats. "And no one has even shown up yet."

"Where's she staying?"

Several men sauntered into the town hall, their boots tromping on the wooden floor, their expressions annoyed. "Where's the doc?" one of the men asked gruffly.

Millie quickly spoke up. "She's stuck at the Cranberry Top Bed and Breakfast. Mr. Wildhaven's kind enough to offer to get her. She's staying in the Blue Room, first door on the left down the hall from the entryway," she directed Leidolf.

The man snorted. "We don't need no damned wolf biologist telling us how we should reintroduce wolves into the wild out here."

"Now, Mr. Hollis," Millie said.

"Don't 'Now, Mr. Hollis' me, Millie. You know I raise sheep, and if any damn wolf slinks onto my land, I'll kill him dead. That's what I'll do."

"I'll go get her," Leidolf said. He stalked out of the building with its oppressive heat and back into the cool out-of-doors. He hadn't figured any of the livestock owners would bother to come to the meeting, but after seeing the burly men, he was afraid the professor was bound for trouble.

Climbing into his Humvee, he assumed the woman probably wouldn't get a whole lot of lecturing done but instead would be faced with a barrage of condemning remarks. He still couldn't figure out why in the world she'd come here instead of lecturing to a more intellectual crowd in the city of Portland, two hours away.

Putting the vehicle in drive, he headed to the Cranberry Top, a quaint little red-roofed home with white siding and a white picket fence. Like many of the homes in the area, the place had been turned into a bed-and-breakfast inn because it was situated on a creek perfect for fishing and picturesque Mount Hood could be seen way off in the distance. Great for a Portland getaway.

When Leidolf arrived at the inn, he saw the vehicle in question, a green pickup with California plates that was tilting to one side. Women. Probably didn't know how to change a tire or call for someone to come and fix a flat. He'd barely opened the door to his Humvee when a woman hurried out, red hair in curls down to her shoulders and bouncing with her every step, eyes sea green and wide and hopeful, brow furrowed as she clutched a leather satchel tightly against her chest and headed straight for him. Dr. Roux? At least he presumed that's who she was, only he'd expected someone a lot less leggy and less stunning to look at.

What he'd figured he'd see was a gray-haired older woman, her hair swept back in a bun, with oval gold rimmed glasses perched on her nose. Instead, this woman looked to be in her midtwenties and in terrific form, with shapely legs and a body to match. He envisioned her hiking through woods on wilderness treks to observe wolves, dispelling the notion that she was strictly a classroom lecturer.

"Dr. Roux?" he asked, feeling more like a knight in shining armor now.

She didn't smile but looked worried as hell as she chewed a glossy lip and then gave a stiff nod. "Did Millie send you for me?" She didn't wait for him to answer and motioned to the truck. "I changed the tire already." He frowned and glanced back at the flat tire.

"Someone was nice enough to ruin the spare also when I ran inside to clean up," she added, her tone peeved. "It was too late to have the spare fixed before the meeting."

Irritated that any of the townspeople would treat her that way, he bit back a curse. Yet he couldn't help being surprised for a second time. First, by her appearance. Now, by how capable the little woman was.

He motioned to his Humvee. "I'm Leidolf Wildhaven, rancher south of town. I'll take you to the meeting and have one of my men fix the tires while you're lecturing."

"A rancher," she said softly, her voice slightly condemning.

He cast her a smidgeon of a smile. "Yeah, but cougars are the only animals that bother me of late. Wolves? They're my kind of animal. Protective, loyal-you know, like a dog, man's best friend."

"They're wild, Mr.-"

"I'd prefer you call me Leidolf."

"I'm Cassie. Never met a rancher before who liked wolves." She sounded as though she didn't believe he would care for wolves. Maybe even worried that he might cause her trouble when she lectured.

She climbed into his vehicle, took a deep breath, and her eyes widened again. He swore if he hadn't blocked her in as he held the door ready to shut it for her, she would have escaped. He heard her slight intake of breath and her heartbeat accelerate. Her gaze swiftly swept over him as if he was suddenly someone of more importance. She swallowed hard and smoothed her skirt over her lap, drawing his eye, and then she pulled away from him as much as possible.

She took another deep breath and met his gaze. "Wolves are wild and unpredictable. But you're right. They're also protective and loyal. Thanks for coming to get me."

He smiled in response, appreciating that she was a wolf advocate yet understood wolves well enough to realize how dangerous they could be, and felt a slight connection to her right away. Before he could shut her door, she quickly added, "You... are taking me to the town hall, right?"

"Yeah. Millie Meekle said you needed a lift."

Cassie still looked a little alarmed when Leidolf climbed into the vehicle, and he supposed he could understand her wariness. Millie should have called to let Cassie know he was coming to get her.

"I never figured I'd have trouble out here." She snapped her seat belt in place and pressed herself against the passenger door, almost as if she was attempting to keep as far away from him as she could.

For someone who studied wolves, she seemed a tad skittish. Which made him wonder if she'd had trouble with men before. Instantly, that thought gnawed at him, no matter that he'd just met her.

Review: Breakfast in Bed by Robin Kaye

Breakfast In Bed
by Robin Kaye

Sourcebooks Casablanca; 1 edition (December 1, 2009) ~ 384 pages
Fiction / Romance / Contemporary Romance

Edition Reviewed: Paperback - Review copy received courtesy of the publisher, many thanks to both the author and the publisher for sending me a copy to review!

Perfect for : Personal Use

My Thoughts:
Robin Kaye has written a book full of romance and wit... along with a little tension... and some characters that you will love to fall in love with!

Once I picked up this book, I couldn't put it down. Rich is the ultimate LAZY bachelor, who still has his mother's help cleaning up his apartment and doing his laundry... he can't even make a cup of coffee for himself! Becca has strived to become a person people see for her own talent, not because of her family name.

Through circumstances beyond either of their control, they have both sublet the same apartment... Becca's loft/studio is being remodeled, and Rich has just moved to town, so neither one wants to move out! To make things more interesting, Rich's long-distance girlfriend is no longer "long-distance" and she tells him that he is not long-term relationship material. After a talk with his friend and mentor at work, he feels pressure to show that he has a serious relationship, so sets out to make himself into a someone that Gina will take back.

After talking to his buddies, he determines that he must become a "Domestic God" at home in order to try to win Gina back, so he approaches Becca for help to become what he thinks Gina wants. After some convincing, Becca decides to go ahead and help him, and over the course of his lessons, he seems to only be able to learn things the hard way, causing me to laugh a lot!

I love how the story turns out, and the supporting characters in the book, especially Rich's Aunt Rose (I challenge anyone NOT to simply adore her by the end of the book!), and Becca's cat Tripod.

I will say that I can't wait to go back and read the first two books as the characters from those books appear in this one, and now I've got to see how they grew in their relationships!

About the Book:

From the publisher: The third funny, sexy, contemporary romance from a fresh new voice in romance fiction…

Rich, the epitome of “anti-domestic,” can’t cook to save his life, and his idea of cleaning his apartment is to invite his mother over. But he’s ready to settle down, and he can’t stop thinking about the ex-girlfriend who got away. When he notices that his soon-to-be-married friends cooked and cleaned their way into their women’s hearts, he asks his friend Becca to help transform him into a nurturing man to win back his ex.

Rich is the only guy who’s taken the time to know Becca for herself. She decides she’ll give him the makeover he’s asking for, though she’ll be damned if she’s going to turn him into a domestic god for another woman. She wants Rich for herself, but how can she convince him that her kitchen and her bedroom are the only domestic locales he desires?

Excerpt: From the publisher's site

Rebecca Larsen shouldered open the door of her new Park Slope apartment and surveyed the wreckage. A pizza box lay open on the coffee table, containing the remnants of a sausage and mushroom pizza of indeterminate age. By this point, Becca was on her last nerve. Her cat had shrieked for the entire trip from Philadelphia to Brooklyn, and as Becca gazed about the room, she began to feel a sensation akin to entering the Twilight Zone.

Annabelle, Becca's best friend, sister-in-law, and resident of the apartment until two weeks ago, wasn't a neatnik by any stretch of the imagination, but Becca had never seen her leave this much of a mess. Empty beer bottles littered the remaining space on the coffee table, and a pair of very large shoes lay underneath. Men's shoes. Becca's sense of unease escalated. It definitely looked as if there was a man living there. Yep, the XXL fleece hoodie thrown on the couch was her first clue; the second was the singing that came from the direction of the bathroom seconds after the hiss of the shower started. Becca grabbed the baseball bat she found leaning against the wall by the closet and skulked to the bedroom. The bed was unmade, which wasn't startling, but the collection of men's jeans hanging off every surface as well as a mess of jockey shorts and socks on the floor certainly was. Not as much, though, as the voice coming from the shower. It was a rich bass baritone, and if she wasn't mistaken, he was singing an old '40s tune. God, who sings songs from the '40s? Whoever it was had a smooth, smoky, sexy-as-hell voice that was hot enough to make a woman melt like chocolate in a two thousand-degree kiln. The guy in the shower had one hell of a voice. Too bad he was also going to have one hell of a bruise.

She spent some time thinking about whether she should hit him while he was in the shower or wait until he got out. He'd gotten through the first stanza of his song and the whole chorus before she decided to wait until he emerged. The shower curtain might severely curtail the speed at which the bat would hit, and then there was the problem of proper aim.

Pushing the door open with the end of the bat, she watched the steam roll toward her and bring with it the scent of yummy-man. A man who smelled like that at any other time would have her following him just to get a whiff. His scent was clean, with citrus and spice overtones that made her mouth water. The body that stepped out of the shower bare-ass-naked stole the breath from her lungs, the attack plan from her memory, and made her thankful she was a woman who could appreciate the human form because she'd never seen one finer. Her eyes wandered back to his face just in time to see the corner of his full lips lift to form a grin. If looked at separately, each part of his face—the Roman nose, sapphire blue eyes, curled spiky black eye lashes—was almost pretty, but something about the way they fit together and the addition of his five-o'clock-shadow-before-noon, stole the prettiness from his face and made it arrestingly gorgeous. He was the Sicilian version of a Greek god. He had to be the most beautiful man she'd ever seen in person, and as a sculptor, she'd seen more than her fair share of beautiful people. Too bad she disliked him.
Rich Ronaldi looked over his shoulder to find his sister's best friend staring wide-eyed at his bare ass. Well, maybe it wasn't only his ass she stared at because when he turned, she got a load of the full monty.

Becca rested the end of the bat she carried on the floor. "Excuse me, but what the hell are you doing here?"

Rich had never been the shy type, but the women who got a load of him in the buff were usually invited to do so. Becca, Miss prim-and-proper-ice-princess, wasn't. He wished he knew where the damn towels were. He'd just moved in, well, in a figurative sense of the word. He'd stayed there for a few days, and he had a towel somewhere, but knowing himself, it was on the floor along with his dirty socks and underwear.

If he'd known she'd be coming by, he'd have kicked them into the closet or at least under the bed. But then, Becca was the last woman he'd expected to darken his doorstep. He had no clue why, but since their first meeting, he got the distinct impression she wasn't overly fond of him. "How did you get in here?"

Becca didn't seem to grasp the fact that standing naked in front of a woman who wouldn't normally give him the time of day is not the most comfortable thing to do. She didn't turn away or hand him a towel, not that there was one at hand. He brushed past her into the bedroom, saw a towel hanging off the footboard of his bed, and quickly tied it around his waist. The only reaction he saw from Becca was a blink.

"I used my key. What are you doing in my bedroom, taking a shower in my bathroom, which is conveniently located in my apartment?"
Rich let out a laugh. "Hold on. I'm the one asking the questions here. This is my apartment. I'm leasing it from Rosalie and Nick."

She crossed her arms, the action pulling her baggy sweatshirt taut across her chest. A chest he forgot she even had. When he realized he was staring, he returned his gaze to her face and found her rolling her eyes.

"You're impossible. So is your story since I'm subletting the apartment from Annabelle. It was her apartment, and now it's mine. You need to leave."
She looked like one of those sexy Anime cartoon characters. She was tall, just a few inches shorter than his own 6'3", and thin with long, long legs and short, choppy, platinum blonde, perpetually tussled hair that gave her a sexy as hell, just-been-fucked look. Rich mimicked her stance, careful not to spread his legs wide enough to dislodge the towel, though it would serve her right if he did. "You're wrong. Rosalie and Nick own the apartment. They rented it to Annabelle, who has since moved out. I moved in. If anyone is leaving, it's you."
"Well then, we have a problem. Because as of right now, I'm living here."
"Not with me, you're not."
"Exactly."
He waved his arm to encompass the whole apartment, and the whole mess he had scattered across it. "Possession is nine-tenths of the law."

"The only possession I see here is your mess. Everything I own that's not in storage is now in the living room, so, in that respect, as in others too numerous to count, you come up…" She looked him up and down with a critical eye. "…decidedly short."

Rich had half a mind to whip off his towel just to show her how very short he wasn't. He was a man comfortable with his body and his um… size. Shit, he'd never had any complaints in that department, and from the look in Becca's eyes when she ogled him—and it was an ogle—she didn't have any complaints either. He was sure she was just trying to get a rise out of him, which she wouldn't. She wasn't his type.

No, Rich's type was a woman like his girlfriend, Gina: a little bombshell. She was all black-haired, copper-eyed, and built like a woman. She was a barely five-foot package of pure TNT. Gina dressed like a woman. You'd never find her wearing an old sweatshirt five sizes too big and a pair of low-slung baggy jeans. "Shit." He looked at the clock. He was going to be late. He was meeting his dean at the Harvard Club and then heading uptown for a date with Gina. "I don't have time to talk about this. I have somewhere to be. Why don't you go out to the living room and let me get dressed. I'll call Nick and Rosalie on my way and find out what to do about this mess. You can spend the night tonight because I have other plans, but I have to tell you, babe, you're gonna be looking for another place to rent."

Review: The Trials of the Honorable F. Darcy by Sara Angelini (Excerpt)

The Trials of the Honorable F. Darcy: A Modern Pride and Prejudice
by Sara Angelini

Sourcebooks Landmark (October 1, 2009) ~ 352 pages
Fiction / Contemporary

Edition Reviewed: Paperback ARC - Review copy received courtesy of the publisher, many thanks to both the author and the publisher for sending me a copy to review!

Perfect for : Personal Reading

**Quick note ~ Readers will find the use of the F*** word occasionally throughout the book, along with some very steamy and detailed sexual encounters (not erotica, but not PG-13 either)

My Thoughts: This is a completely fun and sexy modern-day romp through the San Fransisco courtroom for Judge Fitzwilliam "Will" Darcy and Attorney Elizabeth Bennet, a trial lawyer whose cases often come before Judge Darcy. You will also get to see other memorable characters such as Jane, Bingley, Caroline and Mr. Gardiner (just to name a few), in a whole new light!

Very true to Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, Judge Darcy comes across having a lot of pride, and Elizabeth Bennett herself admits to being prejudice against him initially.

I LOVED the ending, and how the author resolved the conflict of interest. :) I also really enjoyed the gentle epilogue, with its very caring and loving feeling. What a sweet way to end the book.

Characters: Most seemed to be very close in personality to their Austen originals - the only one I found to be a bit of a stretch was Caroline, but she was so well-written, it made for a very interesting addition to the story.

Story-Line: Loved the modern day twists to the original characters. Sara was very creative and most likely had a lot of fun putting Elizabeth and Darcy into the legal system.

Readability: A fun and quick read that turned out to be very entertaining.

Overall: A very fun, modern day adaptation of the classic Pride and Prejudice characters. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the original story by Jane Austen, and subsequent sequels by other authors, but would caution those die-hard Austen fans who may not like the more modern take (very slight profanity, sexual situations) on the story.

About the Book (from Amazon):
A sexy, bold adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice that re-paints favorite characters in twenty-first century colors

Judge Fitzwilliam Darcy, a legal expert on both sides of the Atlantic, is ready to hang up his black robe and return to the life of a country gentleman—until he meets Elizabeth Bennet, a fresh-faced attorney with a hectic schedule and no time for the sexy but haughty judge.

Tempers and sparks fly in Judge Darcy's courtroom— and outside, in a series of chance encounters that give each of them pause—as the two match wits and try to fight their overwhelming attraction. When they meet up in England at an international law conference, they embark on a hot, heavy affair. Back in the States, though, ethical considerations intrude, and each is subjected to a torturous period of soul-searching before they can find their way back to each other...
Excerpt: (from the author's site)

“Oh, come on, Darcy, it will be an absolute bore without you,” Caroline said as she sipped her coffee.

“It will not!” Bingley cried indignantly. Caroline gave him a disbelieving snort and turned back to Darcy.

“It will be full of scrubs and nurses,” she pouted.

“I do know people outside the hospital, you know!” Bingley said hotly. Darcy watched the interaction between older sister and younger brother with amusement. He could almost envision Caroline holding Charles out at arm’s length, her hand on his forehead while he swung fruitless punches at her.

“Aren’t you inviting any of your friends, Caroline?” Darcy asked, sipping his tea.

“I’m inviting you, aren’t I?” she replied, leaning over the table and poking her finger into his chest.

He looked down at her red lacquered nail. There was something about Caroline, a strange mix of socialite and slut that never ceased to fascinate him. It must work on some level, because she’d made a bloody fortune in real estate, but it never quite fired on all cylinders for Darcy. He supposed that was one of the reasons he had never really been serious about her.

“Halloween is a tedious holiday. Everybody thinks it’s their one time in the year to get outrageous by dressing up in costume,” Darcy said derisively.

“It is!” Bingley grinned. “I’m not sure what I’m going to be yet—”

“No doubt it will be outrageous,” Darcy drawled. “Maybe you could be a surgeon. You could wear one of those little paper hats!” he said with mock excitement. Then he shook his head and leaned back in his chair. “It’s a time for everyone to get drunk, act stupid, and hide behind a disguise while doing it.” He took a sip of tea to emphasize his teetotalling point.

Bingley sat back with his arms crossed. “Honestly, Darcy, sometimes I think the wart on Caroline’s ass is more fun than you.”

Darcy choked on his tea, and Caroline swatted Bingley on the head before turning her attention back to Darcy. “Will, really, I’ll be desolate if you don’t come,” she purred. “Bring Georgie; she’ll have fun.”

Darcy rolled his eyes and put down his teacup. Caroline was under the impression that his twenty-five-year-old sister, Georgiana, was perpetually fifteen.

“I’ll make it worth your while,” she sang, tracing a little circle on his hand with her fingertip.

Darcy pointedly ignored her and looked at Bingley. “What time should I come?” he asked with resignation.

Bingley grinned. “The party starts at eight.” His smile disappeared. “And you’d better not come dressed as a judge!”

***

“Come on, Lizzy, you have to come with me. I won’t know anybody there!” Jane pleaded.

“Jane, you’re perfectly capable of making friends. Besides, you’ll know him,” Elizabeth pointed out.

“Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaase!” Jane said, clasping her hands together. “I really like Charley, and I’d like you to meet him.”

“And what better time to have an intimate one-on-one than when he’s hosting a party in a mask?” Elizabeth snorted.

“If you don’t come with me, I’ll… I’ll… I’ll think of something,” Jane finished weakly.

“You are so lame,” Elizabeth laughed. “Fine, I’ll go, but I won’t dance, and I’m leaving at eleven o’clock. I have an early massage tomorrow. You’ll have to find your own way home.”

Jane squealed with pleasure and planted a juicy kiss on Elizabeth’s cheek.

***

“How do you like it?” Caroline asked as she twirled in a circle before Darcy.

“What is it?” he replied, tilting his head. She was wearing a bright orange jumpsuit that ended in short-shorts and fishnet hose. The suit was unzipped halfway down her ample chest, and she was wearing handcuffs.

“It’s a prisoner costume,” she pouted, turning around again.

“Property of the penile system,” he read on her back, laughing.

“Maybe you should put me in jail, Judge Darcy,” she cooed as she sashayed toward him. He laughed again as she put her hands on his hips and did a little grind against them.

“Caroline, what are you wearing?” Bingley’s dismayed cry interrupted Caroline’s seductive routine as he swept into the room wearing a Darth Vader costume. “You were supposed to be Princess Leia!”

“Don’t you find it a little, um, incestuous for us to have coordinating costumes?”

Bingley put the helmet on his head and raised his fist in the air. “You have failed me for the last time!” came the electronic voice from within the helmet. Darth Bingley then turned to Darcy and raised an accusing finger at him. “What the hell are you?” he demanded with a dramatic shake of his fist, clearly enjoying the power of the Force within him.

Darcy, dressed in a black flame-retardant auto-racing suit, put on his helmet and lowered the tinted visor.

“Are you Evel Knievel?” Darth Bingley asked. Darcy shrugged and gave a thumbs-up. Bingley was lucky Darcy had followed through on his promise to attend the party in the first place. Unfortunately for Caroline, Darcy’s change of costume had foiled her plan to appear as his prisoner.

She stuck out her lower lip and groused, “I thought for sure you’d be a judge again.”

“Where the hell is this place?” Elizabeth frowned as she held a flashlight to the map. They were in the middle of nowhere, having taken a winding road off of the Pacific Highway. It had been a good ten minutes since they last saw any signs of civilization.

“Did we take a wrong turn?” Jane asked nervously, gripping the steering wheel and flicking on the high beams. She slowed as the road twisted around a bend.

Up ahead was a row of parked cars, and around the bend an enormous mansion came into view. Jane and Elizabeth looked at each other in disbelief. Just in front of them, a woman in a ballerina costume climbed out of her car. Jane giggled nervously. “Do you think this is the right party?”

“No, most bazillionaires normally keep ballerinas on their grounds just for fun,” Elizabeth quipped.

Jane rolled down her window and tapped the horn lightly.

“Is that Charles Bingley’s place?” she called to the ballerina

“Yes,” the tutu-clad woman replied.

“Oh my God, Jane, your boyfriend is Bill Gates’ rich brother,” Elizabeth breathed, awed by the grandeur of Bingley’s house.

“I don’t think I need to tell you there’s probably security here, so don’t stuff any silverware into your bra.”

“Me? You were the thief when we were kids!” Elizabeth laughed. Together they began the trek up the driveway toward the brightly-lit entrance. At the bottom of the steps, a crowd of costumed guests hovered near a yellow Lamborghini. Darth Vader sat behind the wheel. His head turned to them as they approached.

“Jane!” came his electronic voice. Jane looked at him startled, until he took off his helmet. “Jane, it’s me!” Bingley laughed. He climbed out of the car and walked over to her, giving her a light kiss on the cheek. “I’m so glad you came. You look great! What are you?”

Jane was wearing thigh-high vinyl boots and fishnets, short biker hot pants, and a black leather vest. Her blond hair was curled into a sedate bun at the nape of her neck, a black cap perched jauntily on her head. She turned her back to Bingley, who read the lettering across her vest.

“She’s a Hell’s Angel!” Bingley laughed with delight. After Elizabeth was introduced to Bingley, he led them inside, where the party was already in full swing.

***

Darcy was perusing the drink selection and wondered how he was going to drink with his helmet on when a particular costume caught his attention. The woman was wearing a white tank top and low-slung leather pants with a studded belt and motorcycle boots, but what drew his gaze were the large black feathered wings strapped to her back. The dark kohl smudged around her eyes could not disguise them; he would know those eyes anywhere.

What the hell is Elizabeth Bennet doing here? he wondered. He slipped the dark visor of his helmet down so that she would not recognize him and watched her as she looked nervously around the room. She smiled when a blonde biker chick came to her side and squeezed her hand.

So, she’s a lesbian, Darcy thought, slightly disappointed and slightly turned on.

He stepped aside as they approached the drinks table, heads close together. Elizabeth looked up at him and smiled.

“Nice costume!” she grinned. “Is that your Mach 5 out there, Speed Racer?” Darcy shrugged and gave as bashful an expression one could while wearing a helmet with a tinted visor. Never mind that he wouldn’t be caught dead in such a blatantly ostentatious pimp-mobile.

“Do you know which one is Caroline?” Jane asked Darcy. He pointed to Caroline’s orange back. Just then, Bingley raised a gloved hand and beckoned Jane to him. “I feel an irresistible urge to obey his command,” she droned.

“Okay, Speed and I will be here when you get back—if you survive,” Elizabeth finished ominously. Jane walked toward Bingley who was already pulling Caroline over to meet her.

“I’m Azrael,” Elizabeth said to Darcy, offering her hand. The Angel of Death, he thought, impressed, as he shook her hand with his gloved one. “Nice to meet you, Speed.” He nodded and picked up a bottle of wine, gesturing toward her. “Why, thank you.” She smiled as she held her glass to the bottle. He filled her glass and was about to pour one for himself when he realized he couldn’t drink it without removing his helmet.

“Do you know many people here?” she asked him. He shrugged. She looked at him and tried unsuccessfully to repress a smirk. “Talkative, aren’t you?” He shrugged again and waved his hands in the air. She laughed.

Christ, she’s good looking, he thought. He had never before seen her with her hair down, and he found it unnervingly attractive. She hadn’t come to the party all tarted up like a lot of the women here, nor had she chosen an immature, cutesy costume like, say, a bunny. He had no doubt she knew that in addition to the Angel of Death, Azrael was also the Angel of Law.

“I have a confession,” she said. He crossed his arms over his chest in an expression of interest. “I don’t know anybody here. My sister there works with Charley at the hospital. He invited her, and she dragged me along. I’m a party crasher. It’s always nice to have Death drop in, don’t you think?” she chewed on a swizzle stick and looked at him through her lashes.

Inside his helmet, Darcy grinned.

“Can you believe this place?” Elizabeth mused, taking in her surroundings. “I had no idea that people actually lived in places like this.” Darcy looked around him. It was a bit opulent for his taste, and it was larger than his estate in England, but then Bingley was always one for form over substance. He had no idea why he liked the guy so much.

Darcy turned his attention back to Elizabeth, who was talking to a man in a pirate costume.

“AAAAAAARRRRRRRRRR you having fun?” she asked. The pirate laughed and waved his rubber hook at her.

“Shiver me timbers, I need me some rum!” the pirate growled.

Darcy moved aside and watched in amusement as the pirate fumbled with his hook, a wineglass, and a bottle of wine. Elizabeth raised an eyebrow at Darcy, and then rescued the pirate by pouring the wine for him.

After the pirate had gone, she turned to Darcy and said, “Talkative and helpful.” He put his hand over his heart and bowed slightly in apology. She laughed. “It’s really quite sad that I am completely entertained by a mime.”

He laughed again inside his helmet. They stood in comfortable silence as the party became more raucous. As the crowd became thicker, Elizabeth was jostled and spilled red wine down her white tank top.

“Goddamit!” she exclaimed. “This was my last white tank top!” Darcy grabbed a bottle of seltzer water while she dabbed at her top with a paper napkin. He wetted a towel and began to press it to her chest, unwittingly groping her. When her gaze rose sharply, he snatched his hands back and gave her the towel and seltzer water, then watched as she drenched her shirt with it. The stain came out, but now he could see the lacy pattern of her bra underneath. An unexpected surge of excitement thrilled in his core—with that covert bit of lace, her sex appeal had just skyrocketed.

With the sweltering crush of the party around them, Elizabeth’s wings began to wilt, as did Darcy’s social fortitude. Ignoring her questioning look, he gently pulled her arm, and they squeezed through the crowd toward the front door. There he rifled through the drawer of an antique card table where Bingley had predictably left his garage door opener.

Darcy grabbed her hand and led her down the steps of the house and toward the garage.

“What are you doing?” she asked warily.

He held his hand up to her in a reassuring gesture.

“You’re not going to axe murder me, are you?”

He stopped and assumed a pensive expression, helmeted chin resting on palm, finger tapping against the helmet. After visually debating with himself, he shook his head. Then he threw his hands up in the air and tugged her by the hand again.

Although Elizabeth had slight misgivings, no mental alarms were ringing, so she let the mysterious stranger lead her to the garage. With the garage door opener pilfered from Bingley’s foyer, he opened the garage and turned on the light. Elizabeth gasped. Bingley had a car collection! While she gaped, Speed rifled through a key cabinet until he found the set he was looking for. Jingling the keys in his hand, he walked confidently to a Ferrari Enzo. When she hung back, he turned to her and beckoned her to follow him. She did, and after helping remove her wings, he assisted her while she climbed into the low-bodied car. Then he jogged over to the driver’s side and expertly slid in. Clearly, this was a man with experience in getting in and out of outrageously expensive cars.

The engine started with a throaty growl, and he carefully maneuvered out of the garage and onto the driveway. The serpentine back road lured the purring motor of the car, and Darcy felt the call in his soul. It hadn’t been that long ago that he tore recklessly across these very roads; he knew their twists and dips like he knew the lines of his own face.

“Are you stealing this car?” she asked. He laughed and shook his head. Pausing at the end of the driveway, he leaned over and adjusted the racing safety harness that crossed over her chest. Then he revved the engine and looked at her—she looked apprehensive.

“Do you know what you’re doing?” she asked, her hand gripping the door.

He nodded. He pointed at his helmet, his gloves, his jumpsuit, and his racing shoes.

“Authentic?” she asked. He nodded. “Authentic eBay?” she clarified.

He shook his head and jabbed his thumb into his chest. Then he gave her thigh a comforting squeeze. Then, with a thumbs-up, he revved the engine. He stepped on the gas and the sleek machine glided forward.

Elizabeth felt her heart lurch as they surged forward. Images of being arrested—or worse, crashing—flitted through her mind as Darcy increased their speed. They took a curve, the car hugging the asphalt like a reunited lover, and suddenly, she was exhilarated. He gave the car more gas, the force pushing her back into the seat as they took another twist.

While the restraining harness brought Elizabeth some comfort, it was the skill of Speed that allowed her to enjoy the roller-coaster thrill of the ride. Each curve swung her toward the door or toward Speed, and she screamed with laughter when he caught air cresting a low hill.

Next to her, Darcy was grinning like an idiot in a joke store. The car belonged to him, stored in Bingley’s hermetically sealed automotive museum. Some motor enthusiasts were afraid to drive their sports cars, fearing to scratch the paint or get dirt on the leather seats. But not Darcy. He felt true joy when pushing the performance of a car that was more like a wild animal than a machine.

With Elizabeth in the car, he was barely going over the speed limit, but in an Enzo it was still an exhilarating ride. He didn’t know what impulse had made him decide to take her for a ride, for there was no telling how she would react, but deep inside, he had somehow known she would enjoy it.

Finally, when her hair was wind-whipped and her eyes were bright with breathless excitement, Darcy steered the car back to the garage. As they pulled under the florescent lights, he glanced at her. With a child-like grin, she gave him a double thumbs-up.

Elizabeth extricated herself from the car, her wobbly knees forcing Darcy to offer her a steadying hand. As he helped strap her back into her wings, his gloved finger brushed her bare shoulder, raising tiny bumps on her skin. She turned to face him and peered into the dark reflective visor.

“Who are you?” she breathed.

Caught up in anonymous flirting, Darcy nearly lifted his visor before remembering himself. He was sure the half-smile on her face would fade when she knew she’d just been taken for a spin by Judge Darcy. So instead of revealing his identity, he shrugged and looked away, then walked her back to the house with his hands clasped behind his back.

He spent the rest of the evening by her side, a silent sentinel warding off any potential flirts with his blank gaze. He stood near when she stepped outside for air, followed her to the buffet, and held her drink when her hands became full. He diminished the destruction wrought by her wings, gently pulling her away from sneezing guests or catching goblets as she brushed by the wine station.

When Jane squeezed out of the crowded dance floor and grabbed Elizabeth’s hand, laughing, “Come and dance!” Elizabeth looked questioningly at Speed. Although he regretted it, he could not possibly dance while wearing the helmet—and he certainly couldn’t take it off now. Instead, he stroked a finger over one bent and broken feather on her wing.

“You’re right, I’ve done enough damage.” Elizabeth nodded. “Thanks, but no,” she said to Jane.

Jane was just about to beg when Bingley grabbed her hand and pulled her back into the crowd with a yelp.

“You think he’ll slip her the light saber later tonight?” Elizabeth smirked. Darcy did his best to interpret her glance as anything but inviting and looked out to the dance floor where Caroline was showcasing in tangerine glory. She waved at him, and Darcy raised a hand in acknowledgment.

“Is that your girlfriend?” Elizabeth asked.

Darcy looked down at Elizabeth and shook his head unhurriedly. Elizabeth’s lips curled into a coy smile, and she looked at him from beneath her thick lashes. Hooking her thumbs into her belt loops, she swung her hips to the music. She did a slow turn, giving him a generous view of her shapely behind as she continued her dance, throwing a warm look over her shoulder.

Darcy leaned lazily back against the wall, arms crossed. Is she doing a little dance for me? he mused, smirking. Her sex appeal was undeniable, and Darcy was definitely feeling its pull. It wasn’t just the room temperature that was fogging up his visor.

He watched as she faced him, singing a line to him. It was amazing how sensual her lips were, caressing the words. He fell completely under their spell, his pulse quickening and his groin stirring to semi-erection. Almost too late he realized that she was undoing the strap of his helmet, that luscious lower lip tucked mischievously between her teeth.

He stood up straight and firmly caught her wrists, wagging a reproving finger at her.

“Okay, Speed,” she laughed, “your secret identity won’t be revealed tonight.”

He gave an inward sigh of relief as he released her arms. That had been dangerously close to disaster. At least the scare had killed his emerging erection.

Her attempted seduction unsuccessful, Elizabeth looked ruefully at the clock and sighed. “I should be going.”

There was no doubt in Darcy’s mind this time—her look was definitely an invitation. He sorely regretted that he could not take her up on her offer and could have kicked himself when he saw her brows scrunch in disappointment.

“Well, anyway, it was nice meeting you,” she said as she offered him her hand. He shook it, holding it just a fraction too long. Then she was gone, and he had not said a single word.

Darcy pushed his way outside and tore off his helmet, shaking his soaking head and gulping in fresh, cool air. A moment later, Caroline emerged from behind, giving him a playful swat on the butt.

“Miss me?” she asked playfully. He didn’t answer but looked out into the night. “We still have time to use these.” She waved her handcuffs at him.

He laughed shortly and shook his head. “No thanks,” he answered, his mind still distracted by the unexpected—unexpectedly pleasant—company of Elizabeth.

"I told you I’d make it worth your while, and I never break a promise,” she sang as she slipped her arms around his waist. She pressed against him and looked at him invitingly.

“No need, I enjoyed myself. I won’t hold you to it,” he said.

“But will you hold it”—she pressed against his groin—“against me?”

“No thanks, Carrie. Not in the mood.” He pushed her gently away, and she looked at him in slight confusion and amusement.

“Okay,” she said and took a step back. “Are you all right?” she asked.

He nodded. “I’m fine. Just a little overheated. I think I’ll head home.”
