Tuesday Thingers: DNF aka Did NOT Finish!

Welcome to another week of Tuesday Thingers! We always love to hear from regular participants as well as new people.

Yes, I know! There are times that you simply CAN'T finish a book! [gasp] . . . you either hate the subject, are disappointed in the writing, the characters are flat. . . the list is endless!

Questions: How often do you find yourself struggling through a book (if you HAD to estimate)? How far will you read before you stop and consider it a DNF (Did not finish)? Will you skim ahead and see if it gets any better? Once you put it down, do you still write a quick review? What do you do with the book when you are done?

My Answer: I don't find myself NOT liking a book very often. . . BUT, when it does happen, I generally know within the first 20 pages or so. Even when I'm not enjoying a book (or not getting anything useful from it in the case of a non-fiction book) I will skim it and see if I can get into it farther into the book.

I will generally try to write a quick review, but find myself not publishing it right away so I can edit out the feelings, and sticking to constructive criticism instead. After all, authors and editors put a lot of work into a finished book, and other readers may see it differently than I do. :)

If I don't want to keep the book, I will generally ask someone in one of my book clubs if they want the book. If I don't find any takers, I will generally donate it to the library or local charity.

Looking forward to reading everyone's answers!!

Wow, I'm early this week. And this was an interesting question. My answer's here.

I think I'm pretty good at selecting books that I will like, so I rarely come across one that I just can't finish. It does happen from time to time, though.

I address a bigger problem of mine: DNS (Did not start) and embark on a summer reading challenge!

I played this week! Great question(s). I too take time to edit the bad emotion out of a lackluster review :)

This just happened last week. I pushed my way through 50 pages the just could not handle the vulgar language.

Sometimes I feel like I leave a trail of DNFs behind me, only they're not really DNFs, they're more like IGBTTS (I'll get back to them soon). I have an eclectic taste, and I always let my mood dictate what I'm reading. A book has got to be stellar for me to read through it in one or two sittings, otherwise I hop around, back and forth. Eventually I finish most of them!
